Top 5 Retina Display-Optimised Games for iPad 3

Best of the games designed for the new iPad's Retina display

It's been a few days now since Apple released the "new iPad" into the wild, so we've all had a chance to recover from our 72-hour queuing stints and start playing some actual games on the thing.

The pause has also given game developers time to get to grips with the device's eye-meltingly gorgeous Retina display - the one that makes high-definition TVs look kinda antiquated - and tweak their games to take advantage of all those extra pixels.

To help steer you towards the prettiest graphical upgrades, we've sorted through all of the titles that have been optimised for the new iPad's 2048x1536 screen and can now reveal Qi's Top 5 Retina display-optimised games for the third-generation iPad.

So, fire up your shiny new slate, give that stunning screen a quick polish, and prepare to get a glimpse of the future.

Already a contender for best-looking game on the platform, Chair Entertainment's sword-swinging sequel just became even more beautiful. Enjoy the visual poetry of steel-on-steel combat, secure in the knowledge that you're not missing out on a single spark or armour chink. A brutally handsome spectacle.

If you have any interest whatsoever in sci-fi visuals, you'll want to get some - ahem - FaceTime with Fishlabs's Retina display-optimised space-shooter pronto. Ship details are crystal clear, planet surfaces appear practically habitable, and the lasers look hot enough to burn your fingers off. Your eyes will thank you.

Illusion Labs's ball-based puzzler may not feature explosive particle effects or expansive environments, but that doesn't stop the game's graphical upgrade from dazzling you with its pixel-perfect clarity. Once you've seen the new build in action, you'll think you've been playing the game through the bottom of a pint glass for the past two years.

When you're designing a game as visually striking as this one, you'll want to take advantage of all the pixels the hardware can muster. The zany character art and block-stacking madness of this bonkers tower-builder has been given a new lease of life through its recent graphical overhaul. Gaze in wonder at the exquisitely rendered face of the rainbow unicorn. DO IT.

Though it didn't get the same overall positive critical reception afforded to IronMonkey's Dead Space on iOS, the one thing everyone did praise Mass Effect Infiltrator's creator for was the game's cutting-edge presentation. Well, that edge just became even sharper, with the Retina display-optimised version delivering the full glory of the Mass Effect universe to your new iPad. I'm Commander Shepard, and this is my favourite game on the iPad.
